The groundbreaking marks the next chapter in the organization’s 150-year legacy and brings the vision for expanded programs and opportunities for Norfolk children and families one step closer to reality.

Why Now?
Today, Hunton Y is operating from a temporary location that is at capacity while the organization prepares to return to the St. Paul’s community with a new permanent home.
The new facility will dramatically expand Hunton Y’s ability to provide accessible childcare, education and youth development opportunities for Norfolk children and families.

The Vision
The full vision will be developed in three phases:
Phase One
Early Learning, Childcare & Youth Development
The current Building Our Future Campaign will fund a new 22,700-square-foot facility with spaces designed for early learning, before- and after-school care, summer learning, enrichment and other programs for teens, adults and seniors.
Phase Two
Gymnasium
Phase Two will add a new 10,916-square-foot gymnasium facility with spaces designed for recreation, fitness and community programs, including a gymnasium, weight room, locker rooms and family restrooms, concessions area and gym storage.
Phase Three
Pool
Phase Three will add an approximately 5,700-square-foot outdoor pool and supporting facilities, expanding opportunities for swimming, recreation and aquatic programming. Current plans include an outdoor pool of approximately 2,000 square feet, along with enclosed locker room, changing and restroom facilities.
The $18.3 million Building Our Future Campaign is focused on completing Phase One.
The new Hunton Y will be a welcoming community anchor designed to meet the needs of children and families today while creating opportunities for future growth.

A Legacy Worth Building On
Founded in 1875, the William A. Hunton YMCA is one of only four remaining Heritage YMCAs in the country, established to serve Black individuals and families who were denied access to mainstream YMCAs.
For more than 150 years, Hunton Y has provided education, youth development and opportunities for children and families in Norfolk. Today, it continues that legacy as the oldest independent YMCA in continuous operation in the country.
